Filipino Families Celebrate 2009 Christmas at Different Metro Manila Parks

It's Christmas time! We decided to celebrate our first Christmas as a new family here in our home. Waiting for our many inaanak to visit, mag-mano and greet us a Merry Christmas with their very sweet smile in their face. Then giving them their gifts feels very sweet this Christmas Day.

While most of my friends are having drinks, I decided not to drink this time. Because I want to spend also this Christmas with my wife and our upcoming baby to Church. We want to give thanks to our Lord for this Christmas and all the blessings that we received throughout the year.

That is how I spent my Christmas with my family. Most families spent their Christmas time this way:

This Christmas, many filipinos living here in Manila, Capital City of Philippines decided to celebrate their Christmas in different Parks and Amusement places.

One of the favorites is the Manila Ocean Park located at the heart of Manila. With just 400 Pesos and 350 Pesos entrance fee for adult and child respectively, each one will enjoy the thrill of being in underwater world.

Those who cannot afford Manila Ocean Park can also spend their Christmas Day at different Parks and Playground just like in Kalaw Avenue. Most families brought their lunch and enjoyed their meal with their family.

Another place to stay this Christmas Day is the Baywalk in Roxas Blvd. With a very nice weather, it feels so great to be at the sea shore and watch the beautiful sunset while enjoying Christmas meal.

A lot of families also loves to feel the serenity of Rizal Park or Luneta. It is one of the historical places in Manila and many families are spending their family time here.

It's Christmas! Whatever way we decided to spend it, the most important is to spend it with our family. It's the precious time with our family and with the Lord.

Merry Christmas again. :)

BCLP Computer Instructors: The Busiest Computer Instructor On Earth

Barangay Computer Literacy Program in Pasig are the busiest computer instructor the world have never known. This is what I think of my profession. I am part of this BCLP family that is serving the residents of Pasig City in the Philippines.
bclp computer instructors and office based personnels
Unlike in most schools and training centers, BCLP Instructors are not just doing their job as teachers. Aside from conducting training to its students, a lot of jobs and task that are not part of their job description as computer instructors are performed by each and every instructors of Barangay Computer Literacy Program.
In most schools and training centers, instructors are teaching courses based on their field of specialty. For example, an instructor that is teaching in the field of graphics and design are just teaching courses like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. And other instructors that specialized in other courses are just teaching applications on their field of specialization. Well, not in the case of BCLP Instructors. BCLP instructors were asked to offer all four BCLP levels if their training centers passed the system requirements for a a certain level.
Ok, conducting those all four BCLP levels are still fine for me as BCLP computer instructor. But the other tasks that are being done and were very annoying were those tasks that I believe should be done by office clerks.

Start of Semester
The semester will start by accepting enrollees. The instructor's job is to advertise and promote the BCLP by doing some announcement and public address. Then the instructos will accept enrollees and their requirements for the entire enrollment period. The next job of the instructor is to advised the incoming students to attend the General Brainwashing Orientation. And who's going to get the attendance of the attendees? BCLP computer instructor.
At the start of the training, bclp instructor's next job is to prepare paper works or reports for the beggining of the current sem. Reports like List of Enrollees, Schedule of Classes with Student's Name per Session, and List of Students with Control Number.
While encoding and preparing those reports, the other job of instructors for the beginning of the semester is to prepare the Identification Cards of new students, collecting the student's T-shirt and to submit those shirt for printing. That will be the student's uniform for the computer training.

Assessment Period
At the end of the semester, the bclp students will have their assessment. And instructors were asked to guide accompany their students during the assessment. It is the instructor's job to gather and tabulate the scores of the students. In most cases, bclp instructors are preparing meals and treats for the assessor. Although it is not required, it is advisable to feed the assessor to have a better chance of passing large number of students. Funny isn't it? Yeah, and it became customary in bclp. If the instructor doesn't offer any meal or treats for the assessor, expect that the assessor's feeling and judgment will be erratic and bias against you.

End of the Semester / Start of New Semester
After the assessment, it is now time to prepare for another numerous reports to be passed again, by the instructors. Reports like Assessment Result, List of Graduates, Student's Performance, Top Ten, New Format of List of Graduates and Student's Profile with picture. By the way, this end part of the current semester is overlapping with the beginning of the next semester. So by doing this, bclp instructors were expected that they are doing their job for the start of the semester like promoting the program through announcements and p.a. and accepting new students for the next semester.

Graduation
Until the graduation came, bclp instructors are still working by printing their student's Certificate. After the printing of certificate, the next task of the instructor is to mark each of the certificate with the Dry Seals of the Local Government of Barangay and City Government of Pasig. The instructor should make sure that all the certificates are in ascending order for easy distribution during the graduation ceremony.
Graduation Day in bclp don't happen on a regular basis. A lot of times, the instructors are exerting effort to gather their students by sending them SMS or text and calling them from their home. This is because most graduation days are happening after so many months since the last day of assessment. On the day of the graduation, the instructor's next job is to prepare and decorate the venue. After the ceremony, who will clean the venue? Still the bclp computer instructors. Isn't this a job for engineering or maintenance people? Oh no, in bclp, these are also the job of Computer Instructors.

With this type of system, should we change our job title from BCLP Computer Instructors to BCLP All-Around-Personnel? The funny thing is, most people don't know about this thing happening to bclp. Because they believe that the BCLP office are doing those job and we bclp instructors are just focusing on conducting training.

Strange Sounds Coming From Computer

Computer won't boot and there are strange sounds coming from it. Some sounds that are coming from your computer means serious problems. If you think or suspects that your hard disk drive's life is nearly coming to an end, the safest thing to do is to turn off your computer immediately.
To find out if the hard disk drive is causing the strange noise, disconnect the drive's power cable before turning the computer back on. After you turned on your computer (this time the power cable of your hard drive is disconnected) and there is no more strange sound coming from your computer, that means there's a problem with your hard drive.
If the hard drive is the noise source, your next step is to download a utility that can read the SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) diagnostics codes off the hard drive. SMART data can tell you exactly what's wrong. Here's some of the link to drive's SMART utility download page.

IBM(Hitachi)

Seagate

Western Digital

Another thing to consider are the fans in your computer. If you are concerned about an unusual fan noise, you can use some utility for monitoring your computer system temperature. You can use the free SpeedFan Tool to see if a cooling fan attached to your motherboard is spinning too slowly.

SpeedFan allows you to have a deeper view of the status of your computer. Almost every computer includes support for hardware monitoring. Accessing digital temperature sensors is really useful. If you are trying to figure out why your pc hangs when under heavy load or after some hours of usage, SpeedFan might help you to find the real cause. Very often it is a poor power supply, or an improperly installed heatsink that lead to behaviours that we tend to associate with errors from the operating system, but that are not. SpeedFan automatically searches your computer for interesting chips: the hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can expose voltages, fan speeds and temperatures.
Some parts of your computer will fry themselves if not cooled, and a new fan costs far less than a new CPU or Video Card. So please maintain your PC by cleaning it regularly and by keeping it strange noise free.

Blogger.com Blogspot Custom Favicon.ico Google Hosting

As a Blogger.com or Blogspot blogger, we cannot host our own customized favicon.ico icon on our blog. Yes we can host images on on our PicasaWeb account and post it on our Blogger.com blog but we are not allowed to host any other files like documents and ".ico" icon.
But if you really want to change your favicon to stand out from the rest of Blogger.com or Blogspot blogger, there are simple ways to do it. I have a recent post on how I did it but I changed my mind on where should I host my custom favicon.ico.
On my previous post, I decided to upload my custom favicon.ico file on merrypic.com. It's a free image hosting site that also allows you to upload and host a ".ico" file. But recently I noticed that my custom favicon is missing for some time, and it's because of slight problem on my free merrypic hosting. So I decided to host my custom favicon.ico file on my Google account.
Yes, the powerful Mr. Google can host our favicon.ico so we can use it on our sites. If you type the url of your uploaded favicon.ico file, Google will let you download that file into your computer. Although it doesn't allow us to view the favicon.ico on our browser if we type the direct url of our custom favicon, but still, the file is there to serve us. All you have to do is put the url of your uploaded favicon.ico inside your head tag of your Blogger.com blog template and tada! your favicon is there.
So how does Mr. Google host your favicon.ico? Just upload it with your Google Site. Once you have your Google Site up and running, all you have to do is upload the favicon.ico on your Google Site as an attachment and Google will host it. Then you have to point the link on your Blogger.com template's head to your favicon.ico. Simple, Google. :)

Get rid of Access Denied (license_expired) A license has expired on the Proxy "The SGOS license has expired" error message on my computer's browser

Got this error message on my laptop. I'm surprised co'z this is the first time I got this error message on my Firefox browser and I can't visit major sites like google, youtube and my blog. So I fired up my other browser Internet Explorer and same error appears. Here's the error message:

Access Denied (license_expired) A license has expired on the Proxy, and your request is not permitted: "The SGOS license has expired" A new license must be obtained. For assistance, contact your network support team.

To test if this error message is appearing only on my machine, I turned on my desktop machines on my network and still  I got the same error on both FireFox and IE browsers of each workstations. Not all sites have this error message but this is annoying because all of the major sites that I used have this error message.

How did I get rid of this error message?

Good thing I have this Hot Spot Shield from AnchorFree installed on my laptop. HotSpot Shield ensure you are private, secure and anonymous online. It secure your web session, data, online shopping, and personal information online with HTTPS encryption. It also protect yourself from identity theft online, hide your IP address for your privacy online and access all content privately without censorship and bypass firewalls. It works on wireless and wired connections both on pc and mac.

Although there are advertisements, but that's fine for me since I can now access all sites and get rid of that "Access Denied (license_expired) A license has expired on the Proxy, and your request is not permitted: "The SGOS license has expired" A new license must be obtained. For assistance, contact your network support team." for now.

If still you can't visit major sites because of this same problem after some troubleshooting like rebooting your machine, your router, updating your software and browsers, feel free to try this Hot Spot Shield from AnchorFree and I hope it will work for you like how it works for me.

Pyesta ng Pasig

Today, PasigueƱos are celebrating the feast day of Pasig's patron saint, the Immaculate Concepcion or "Pyesta ng Pasig". According to Roque Butuyan, one of the earliest accounts of the Pasig Fiesta was described by the Belgian traveler J. De Mann on December 8, 1870 the feast day of Pasig's patron saint, the Immaculate Conception.
PasigueƱos celebrate the fiesta as an expression of their faith and an act of thanksgiving for a good harvest. The fiesta also served as a reunion for families, relatives and friends.

Like other traditions, the pasiguenos are now celebrating the fiesta ng pasig just like the older years. Classes in schools are suspend, a mass will be held and a grand procession will happen where people will carry candles and to be accompanied by bands.  Dazzling fireworks followed at night after the grand ball at the Plaza Rizal. Just like the old days.
But wait, there's less... Pasig residents of today are not serving the dishes compare to the old days. According to Roque Butuyan;
Among the dishes usually served were menudo, pancit, kaldereta, morcon, lumpiang gulay, leche flan, ube and sweet beans, among others.
That is not the case now. Residents are just attending the mass and then joining the grand procession and then go straight to nearby fastfood and restaurant to eat. There's no more effort and money spent to have those grandioso dishes on their table at home. Unlike the fiesta of their own barangay's patron saint where they are still making "handa" and fill their table with different dishes and having a street party all day.
The Fiesta ng Pasig today is different from the Fiesta ng Pasig in the old days as described by the Belgian traveler J. De Mann. Residents are just attending the mass, joining the grand procession and watching the fireworks. As for the dishes, fastfood and restaurants are there to serve and have a quick and affordable meal.
Happy Fiesta! :)

New Friendster Gets A Total Makeover

It was Friday when Friendster unveiled its new look after its launch at the Boni High Street. The new Friendster looks simpler and better. With the new horizontal navigation on top showing important pages like Home, Profile, Friends and Photos, the new friendster is now more user-friendly.

The new friendster's shoutout  loads faster than the old one. It reminds me of Facebook's status updates that loads fast after you type in anything that's on your mind. This time, the new friendster wants you to shoutout and tell your ka-friendster "what you're doing right now..."

The new friendster is also rich in Gifts and Fun with lots of game applications. Let's just wait if Zynga will work with the new friendster to put their addictive game apps like Poker and FarmVille.

After this total makeover, will Friendster get back those users who switched to other Social Networking sites like Facebook? Will the new friendster users forget that smiling friendster emoticon favicon "friendster icon" and enjoy this new face of friendster? A lot of internet savvy is saying that friendster was already out of style or boring, will they appreciate this new look of friendster?

Here's the new friendster video.

Arroyo declares Martial law in Maguindanao - Nation - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

The Maguindanao province is now officially under martial law. President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has officially declared it according to Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita.

"Well we are confident that this one is covered by Constitution," said Ermita at a press briefing at the Palace.

The announcement was made days after government troops were sent to the province, which would later raid armories of the powerful Ampatuan clan.

The Ampatuan family was implicated in a gruesome massacre two weeks ago that saw the brutal murder of 57 persons, including 31 media workers and human rights lawyers.

Reports received late Friday night said that the President had already issued an order imposing military rule in the province.

Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao commander, Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer, would function as military governor while Maguindanao governor Andal Ampatuan Sr. will be arrested, the same report said. Arroyo declares Martial law in Maguindanao - Nation - GMANews.TV - Official Website of GMA News and Public Affairs - Latest Philippine News

The martial law state will be limited to only 60 days. This means the government troops should work hard to arrest and impose military rule in the province in order to observe peace and order. Placing the entire maguindanao province under martial law will definitely help the government troops raid armories of the Ampatuan.

Large Number of Delegates on Parade for Pasig City Mayor and his Official Ticket Filing C.O.C.

On December 1, 2009, Pasig City witnessed another way of showing support to its beloved City Mayor. It was the day the Pasig City Mayor, Bobby C. Eusebio formally started his bid for re-election as he and his official ticket filed their certificates of candidacy (C.O.C.) at the local Commission on Election (COMELEC) office.
The parade was formed by different people in all walks of life, like students, entrepreneurs, drivers and operators and different non-government organizations and associations It is one of the biggest parade ever happened to express support to their political leaders  in filing of C.O.C.
Comprising of different groups from all Barangays, the parade was brought heavy traffic to the major streets and ways all over Pasig City. The Traffic and Parking Management Office of Pasig City has been very busy managing the traffic re-routing to give way to the said event.
Each group from different barangay were headed by Barangay Computer Literacy Program volunteer students wearing white and blue shirts with each letter printed in front and back to form the word "BOBBY".
"Running under the Nacionalista Party, Eusebio’s re-election endeavour gained steam as various stakeholders in Pasig City expressed their support for his candidacy after demonstrating competent leadership when the city faced Typhoon Ondoy. The Pasig city local chief executive is also widely credited for implementing innovative programs attuned to the needs of his constituents in the areas of security and peace and order; education and culture; recycling and environment; business, livelihood and employment; infrastructure and housing; social services; youth and sports development; and health." according to Pasig City Official Website.

Txt frm Mam Sheryl... Any Questions?

Last night I received a text (sms) message from our coordinator... "Attention: BCLP; TXT FRM MAM SHERYL - MAYOR'S OFIZ: Mam Rowce, fyi 2mrw 1pm orientatn of automated elec (smartmatic) at 5th flr cnfrence hall. Pls atend as per Lolet T. Austria (LTA) Tnx... If u have any Question, u cn ask me -RDT".
After reading the message, I asked myself why did I received that damn message? That message is clearly not for me and why should I ask question? Or should I? So I immediately replied that I don't have any questions because I clearly understand the message that Mam Sheryl is asking Mam Rowce to attend the orientation. So it doesn't have anything to do with me.
As expected, I received a reply stating "Lhat tyo involved, ako lang ang tinxt nun tao 2 inform BCLP group". It said that we BCLP are involved, and she's just the only one who received the message to inform the whole group. So to clear things, I told her that if she wants to inform us, she just have to tell us. I also told her that we don't need any original messages to be forwarded to us and then left us hanging and expect us to raise questions. I don't think that kind of information dissemination strategy is effective or professional.
Afterwards, I received a final message from her saying "You are directed to attend form the electronic orientation tomorrow 1pm Conference Hall (5th Flr.). After reading this, I laughed a little and sigh hard. Because I really feel sorry for this kind of coordination being done by our ranking officer. *Sigh*... another unprofessional way of coordinating us...
